Client

The Barossa Council

Location

Kroemer’s Crossing Roundabout, Barossa Valley, South Australia

Sector

Road Safety and Infrastructure Design

The Kroemer’s Crossing Roundabout, constructed in 2020 by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport, was designed to improve safety and accessibility at a critical intersection serving the Barossa Valley. Located at the convergence of Barossa Valley Road, Murray Street, Burings Road, Vine Vale Road, and Menge Road, the roundabout enhances access for freight vehicles, local businesses, and tourists traveling to Nuriootpa, Tanunda, Lyndoch, and Gawler.

To support additional improvements, The Barossa Council engaged BE Engineering Solutions (BEES) to conduct an existing conditions Road Safety Audit (RSA) and assess the roundabout’s suitability for proposed landscaping.

The Challenge

Kroemer’s Crossing Roundabout presented several challenges for assessment and design:

  • Balancing road safety with aesthetic landscaping improvements to enhance the visual appeal of this high-traffic area within the Barossa Valley.
  • Evaluating the impact of landscaping on driver visibility, pedestrian safety, and overall functionality of the roundabout.
  • Ensuring the design supported freight accessibility while maintaining safe navigation for all road users, including tourists and locals.
  • Integrating landscaping plans that aligned with the Barossa Valley’s reputation as a world-class tourist destination.

Our Approach

BE Engineering Solutions adopted a comprehensive approach to address the project’s unique requirements:

  • Conducted a thorough assessment of the roundabout’s current conditions to identify any potential safety issues.
  • Evaluated factors such as lane geometry, signage, lighting, visibility, and the interaction between vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians.
  • Assessed the potential impact of the proposed landscaping on driver sightlines and visibility, particularly at entry and exit points.
  • Reviewed the landscaping plan for compliance with Australian road safety standards and to ensure minimal interference with traffic safety.
  • Recommended adjustments to the landscaping design to enhance visual appeal without compromising safety.
  • Proposed sustainable plant species and layouts that required low maintenance and complemented the Barossa Valley’s unique landscape.

Outcome

The comprehensive assessment and recommendations provided by BE Engineering Solutions ensured that the Kroemer’s Crossing Roundabout met safety and operational requirements while enhancing its visual appeal.

Key outcomes included:
