High-Level Concept Design for Rosewater Rail Line Shared Path

Client

City of Port Adelaide Enfield

Location

Port Adelaide, South Australia

Sector

Active Transport and Urban Planning

The City of Port Adelaide Enfield (PAE) is a thriving community known for its diverse commercial hubs, picturesque Port River, and iconic Adelaide beaches. To further enhance its active transport network, the council envisioned a shared use path along the disused Rosewater Rail Line, transforming it into a valuable corridor for cyclists and pedestrians. BE Engineering Solutions (BEES) was engaged to develop a high-level concept design for this project, creating a blueprint for a safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing path that aligns with community and council goals.

The Challenge

The Rosewater Rail Line project presented several challenges that required thoughtful consideration:

  • The former rail corridor had limited existing infrastructure, necessitating innovative solutions to adapt the space for shared use.
  • The design had to integrate with existing transport networks and urban infrastructure in Port Adelaide while minimizing disruptions to surrounding areas.
  • Safety and accessibility for all users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and mobility aid users, were top priorities.
  • The path needed to balance functionality with an attractive design that aligns with the area’s character and encourages community use.

Our Approach

The BE Engineering Solutions team utilised a structured and community-focused approach to deliver a high-level concept design for the shared use path:

  • Conducted a detailed assessment of the former rail line to identify opportunities and constraints for the shared use path.
  • Mapped the corridor’s connections to key destinations, including residential areas, commercial hubs, and existing active transport routes.
  • Created a high-level concept design focused on safety, accessibility, and ease of use for a wide range of users.
  • Proposed features to maximise functionality, including separate lanes for cyclists and pedestrians where space allows, as well as traffic calming measures at intersections.
  • Incorporated design elements such as lighting, signage, and clear road markings to ensure the path is safe for day and night use.
  • Ensured the design accommodated users with varying mobility levels, aligning with Australian accessibility standards.
  • Designed the path to connect seamlessly with Port Adelaide’s broader transport network, linking key urban areas and active transport routes.
  • Proposed solutions to overcome physical barriers such as road crossings and infrastructure gaps.
  • Included landscaping elements that enhance the visual appeal of the path while integrating it with the surrounding environment.
  • Recommended sustainable materials for construction to minimise environmental impact and maintenance requirements.

Outcome

The high-level concept design delivered by BE Engineering Solutions laid the foundation for transforming the Rosewater Rail Line into a valuable shared use path.

Key outcomes included:

  • A clear, well-structured concept design showcasing the potential for a safe and functional shared use path that supports active transport.
  • Integration with the City of Port Adelaide Enfield’s broader transport and urban planning strategies, promoting community connectivity.
  • Recommendations for features and materials that align with sustainability goals while maintaining long-term durability.
  • An engaging and community-focused design that enhances Port Adelaide’s reputation as a hub for active transport and outdoor recreation.
