Golden Grove Corridor Upgrade – Enhancing Public Transport Efficiency

Client

GHD

Location

Golden Grove, Modbury Heights, and Modbury North, South Australia

Sector

Traffic Modelling and Infrastructure Upgrades

The Golden Grove Corridor Upgrade, led by the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT), aimed to enhance public transport efficiency and traffic flow along Golden Grove Road, a critical arterial route connecting key suburbs in Adelaide. The project involved implementing bus priority treatments at four key intersections to improve public transport travel times and reliability. Partnering with GHD, BE Engineering Solutions (BEES) was engaged to provide advanced traffic modelling and analysis to assess and optimise the proposed upgrades.

The Challenge

The Golden Grove Corridor presented several challenges requiring precise modelling and innovative solutions:

  • Addressing high traffic volumes and congestion at major intersections while incorporating bus priority treatments to enhance public transport performance.
  • Evaluating the performance impacts of the proposed schemes during peak traffic periods (AM and PM).
  • Refining and developing alternate designs to achieve the best balance between public transport efficiency and general traffic flow.
  • Delivering detailed modelling results and insights to guide decision-making for future infrastructure upgrades.

Our Approach

BE Engineering Solutions adopted a structured, data-driven approach to deliver comprehensive traffic analysis and modelling:

  • Conducted on-site investigations during AM and PM peak periods to collect real-world traffic data, including vehicle counts, queue lengths, and public transport movement.
  • Identified key bottlenecks and conflict points affecting traffic flow and public transport efficiency.

Developed detailed SIDRA models for the four key intersections:

  • Golden Grove Road / The Grove Way / Yatala Vale Road
  • Grenfell Road / Golden Grove Road
  • Milne Road / Golden Grove Road
  • North East Road / Modbury Avenue / Golden Grove Road
  • Level of Service (LOS) to evaluate traffic flow efficiency.
  • Degree of Saturation to measure intersection capacity utilization.
  • Average Delay for vehicles and buses.
  • Evaluated the impacts of proposed bus priority treatments on general traffic and public transport users.

Prepared comprehensive Traffic Analysis and Modelling Reports, documenting:

  • Existing traffic conditions.
  • Predicted performance under proposed and alternate schemes.
  • Recommendations for achieving optimal outcomes.
  • Provided actionable insights to guide the implementation of the final designs.

Outcome

The traffic modelling and analysis conducted by BE Engineering Solutions supported the successful planning and design of the Golden Grove Corridor Upgrade.

Key outcomes included:

  • Enhanced public transport performance, with bus priority treatments designed to reduce delays and improve reliability at key intersections.
  • Improved traffic flow for all road users, balancing the needs of public transport and private vehicles.
  • Actionable insights that allowed DIT and GHD to make informed decisions about infrastructure upgrades.
  • A robust framework for future traffic and transport improvements along the Golden Grove Corridor.
