The City of Unley sought to address longstanding traffic and safety concerns along Mills Street, a local crossing collector road. With increasing traffic volumes and problematic road user behaviour, the council prioritised a redesign to enhance safety, improve functionality, and elevate the aesthetic appeal of the streetscape. BE Engineering Solutions was engaged to deliver the detailed design and documentation for these streetscape improvements.

The Challenge

Mills Street faced several challenges that required expert intervention including:

  • High traffic volumes and speeding contributed to safety concerns for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.
  • The existing two-lane angled slow points were outdated and ineffective at moderating traffic behaviour.
  • The flat-top road humps no longer met current traffic calming standards, reducing their effectiveness.
  • There was a need to integrate additional landscaping elements to enhance the street’s appearance and functionality.

The project aimed to provide a comprehensive solution that balanced traffic management with an improved urban environment.

  • Reconstructed the existing two-lane angled slow points to better manage vehicle flow and encourage safer driving behaviour.
  • Replaced the outdated flat-top road humps with Watt’s profile road humps, which are designed to be more effective at reducing vehicle speeds while maintaining comfort for drivers.
  • Integrated additional landscaping elements, including tree planting and greenery, to improve the street’s aesthetic appeal and contribute to a more pleasant environment for residents and road users.
  • Designed features to complement the surrounding urban character while requiring minimal maintenance.
